Lúcia is a Brazilian biologist who has international expertise in regulatory systems and challenges facing biotechnologies and related areas, including biosafety (risk assessment and management), training, and outreach. She contributed to developing science-based regulations for the adoption of new technologies in Brazil and other parts of the world. Lúcia is knowledgeable about international environmental negotiations relevant to biotechnologies, such as the United Nations Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB), Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). She has participated in seven of the United Nations COP/MOP meetings, served on the advisory group on the Biosafety Clearing House, and was a member of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (ATHEG) on synthetic biology. Lúcia was vice-president of the Brazilian Biosafety Association (ANBio) and a member of the Council for Biotechnology Information (Brazil). She is a member of the Farmers Scientist Network (Europe), a member of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) project for Genome Editing in Plants, and executive secretary of the international Public Research and Regulation Initiative. Lúcia is an Alliance for Science Global Leadership Fellow who obtained her Ph.D. in plant biochemistry at the Friedriech Miescher Institute/University of Basle in Switzerland. She is fluent in Portuguese, English, German, and Spanish.
